Joey Arias

joey ariasThe fabulous Joey Arias

I’m so sick of hearing about that trashy Jodi Arias … the first time I heard that name, I mistakenly heard “JOEY ARIAS” — who is so ultra amazingly cool!

So, remember folks — JOEY not JODI!

In honor of Vicki Sue Robinson, who died in 2000 of cancer, today is her birthday.

Here she is performing her greatest hit on The Midnight Special:

And here’s another cool tune from 1982:

Tribute to Wendy O. Williams on Her Birthday (RIP)

Happy Birthday to Some Amazing Ladies!

Wendy O. Williams - 2Wendy O. Williams

Today we have some amazing women to celebrate, in no particular order.

First up, Wendy O. Williams, of Plasmatics fame! Wendy O. died in 1998. She was a total inspiration to me as a teenager. I saw her band many times and got to meet her too. She was super nice.

Here’s a Plasmatics tune and their outrageous stage show:

Plasmatics – Butcher Baby

Today is also the birthday of Gladys Knight.

Here is my favorite song by her:

You’re the Best Thing that Ever Happened to Me

It’s also Kylie Minogue’s birthday. I love this piece she did with Nick Cave:

Kylie Minogue & Nick Cave: Where The Wild Roses Grow

It’s also my Mom’s birthday. She really loves this song by the late Mick Karn:

Mick Karn “Sensitive”

Now how’s that for some eclectic musical enjoyment?

Happy Birthday to Morrissey

RIP Ray Manzarek of The Doors, died of cancer today, age 74.

I always loved his unique keyboard sound with the Doors. I never met him, but I actually saw him in person at one of the Chiller Conventions. (And of course I was too young to see the Doors perform).

Here’s something cool I found on You Tube:

Ray Manzarek: Best organ solo

Another sad day. Our loss, heaven’s gain.

Happy Birthday Cher!

Happy Birthday to Cher who turns 67 today!

Cher has been one of my favorites since I was a little girl. I got to see her perform twice, once in the late 1980s and again in the 1990s (with Cyndi Lauper as warm-up act).

Cher has such a vast collection of work, but here are some goodies off  the top of my head! (And it’s worth looking at every single one of these videos to see her outfits — of course!)

Maryanne Christiano-Mistretta

tommy-james-and-the-shondells-crystal-blue-persuasion-rouletteDon’t you just love when you hear songs in your dreams?

Last night I heard two of my favorite songs while sleeping.

First up was “I’m Gonna Make You Mine” by Lou Christie. Now Lou Christie is one of my favorite singers of all time. I’ve discovered him within the past five years. He was a 1960s artist. I remember “I’m Gonna Make You Mine” as a little kid. But a few years ago, while listening to a transistor radio on the beach with my husband, we heard “The Gypsy Cried.” The lyrics freaked me out, but then I heard the song again and fell in love with it. I was like, “We have to see this dude!” We saw him live, twice (the second time I got to shake his hand!) Lou Christie is amazing because he wrote most of his songs as a teenager, with a woman who…

Happy Birthday Dick Dale!

Maryanne Christiano-Mistretta

At the Surf Club (now demolished thanks to Hurricane Sandy)

Happy Birthday to legendary Dick Dale!

My husband and I make it a point to see him perform whenever he comes to New Jersey. For a few years he was struggling with cancer so he wasn’t touring, but last summer we saw him again. I posted about it on my Maryanne’s Jukebox page: https://maryannesjukebox.wordpress.com/tag/dick-dale/. There are pictures and some video footage, from The Surf Club that no longer exists  thanks to Hurricane Sandy.

Here’s his best song ever, “Misirlou” from 1963

Here’s another goodie:

I think Dick is coming around again in August — I can’t wait!
